The Hillsboro High School Trojans scholars’ bowl team won the Mid-Central Activities Association title Saturday at Lyons.
The Trojans went 4-1 in pool play, with wins against Wichita Collegiate, 40-30; Hoisington, 75-0; Hesston, 75-50; and Ellinwood, 60-0. Their lone loss was against Haven, 50-40.
They advanced to pool play and defeated Halstead in the semifinals, 40-30 on the second tiebreaker question.
In the championship match, the Trojans faced Marion. The match was tied, 35-35, with two questions left. Briana Loewen correctly answered the question, “How many strings does a viola have?” The answer was “four.”
“Marion has a good team,” Coach Stuart Holmes said. “They beat us on the buzzer and guessed five.”
The answer gave the Trojans a 45-35 win and a league championship. The participants were Cody Blackketter, Sam Bookless, Ben Gottsch, Loewen, and David Winter.
“The kids had another great day,” Holmes said. “Obviously, they are a smart group of young people, but in addition they are very knowledgeable about many different subjects. They have done a great job of keeping their composure and thinking clearly in tight matches.”
The Trojans have at least one more tournament this season. The regional meet is Thursday at Wichita Collegiate, and they will have a chance to qualify for the state tournament.
