Hillsboro students win awards in art festival

Hillsboro High School student Erin Wiebe received five awards at the Central Kansas League art festival April 30 at McPherson College.

She received a gold award for her piece, “Girl With Hat,” silver awards for “Esmerelda,” “Tina Fey,” and “Audrey,” and a merit award.

Kalie Siebert received a silver award for “Clock.” Tara Proffitt and Amber Liu each received one merit award, and Matthew Reeh received two merit awards.

The festival included 318 pieces of art by 110 students. Ted Krone, art program director at Friends University in Wichita, and Ann Krone, adjunct professor of art at Friends, judged the show.

During judging, students took workshops in McPherson College’s art facilities. In one workshop, Hillsboro senior River Cecil learned how to make a plaster cast of his own arm, but one factor he didn’t consider made taking the cast off painful — arm hair.
