Hillsboro tennis season ends
The 3-2-1A boys’ tennis regional in Hesston on Saturday brought to a close both a season and a career, as the Hillsboro Trojans and senior Josh Funk played their final matches of the year.
The stay was short for the Trojans, who were eliminated in opening-round losses in one doubles and two singles matches.
Funk was blanked by Victor Chang of Hutch Trinity 6-0, 6-0, but coach Stuart Holmes recognized him for his leadership on an otherwise inexperienced team.
“Josh has had a great attitude and it has been positive to have him as part of the team,” Homes said.
Dylan Wiens played in the other singles slot, losing 6-0, 6-0 to Lakeland Conrad of Wichita Collegiate.
Jacob Isaac and Brendan Wiebe paired for doubles against a Hesston team. The Trojans duo picked up a game win but lost the match 6-0, 6-1.
Wiens, Isaac, and Wiebe were freshmen playing their first season of competitive tennis.
“If they work at improving their games in the off-season, they have the potential to be more competitive next year,” Holmes said.
