Hillsboro wrestlers had a busy week competing in duals both Thursday at Council Grove, and Saturday at Southeast of Saline.
Council Grove defeated Hillsboro 51-30 after several forfeits put them down 30 points.
“Of the eight matches contested on the mat, we won half of them,” coach Scott O’Hare said. “Three of the four losses were by our less experienced freshman against solid opponents, and all competed hard.”
The fourth loss came from wrestler Jon Carey 126 lbs., who lost by one point to Austin Swartz the number six-ranked wrestler his class. Cody Delk, 152 lbs; Levi Mendoza, 182 lbs; Nathan Simhiser, 195 lbs; and Matt Reeh, 285 lbs; defeated their opponents.
At the Southeast of Saline dual tournament, Trojan wrestlers defeated Wabaunsee, 54-6, before falling to Russell, 36-33, and SE of Saline, 51-24.
O’Hare said the tough matches over the last week have helped prepare his team for the league tournament coming up on Saturday in Nickerson.
“We are starting to see some guys using solid technique, most are beginning to find what works best for them, and this past week helped expose some weak areas that we need to continue working on, as a team, and individually,” he said. “We plan to pick up the intensity in practice over the next two weeks to hopefully hit peak performance levels once the regional tournament comes around.”
