Hillsboro wrestlers pinned in Herington

Hillsboro’s young wrestling team continued to fall to more experienced challengers during a tournament Saturday in Herington.
The team placed last out of 14, earning only 30 points, but coach Scott O’Hare said the team continued to show improvement.
“Although I am disappointed in the overall results on Saturday, I do not believe it is a clear indicator of the progress these young men continue to make,” he said. “We continue to see improvement in areas of their performances. However, it is obviously not always translating into wins on the mat.”
O’Hare said the team continued to practice with determination and good work ethics.
Bright spots in Saturday’s tournament were efforts by junior Jon Cary; senior Preston Nelson, who went on to a semifinal match; and Levi Mendoza, who placed third in his weight class.
The team fared better at a double dual Thursday at Chapman, defeating Herington 45-18 before losing to Chapman 39-27.
The dual was the first time freshman Cody Delk was able to compete after an arm injury that kept him from wrestling last year.
“If we get a few things cleaned up with his technique,” O’Hare said, “then I think he will surprise some people in the later part of the season.”
