Hillsboro wrestlers snatch victory
Hillsboro wrestling opened its season last week with a 1-1 performance at Halstead, capturing a close match against the home team.
Hillsboro downed the Dragons 36-30 thanks to taking six individual victories, one more than Halstead could muster.
“As a group, we have a lot to work on, but that is expected at this point in the season,” coach Scott O’Hare said. “If we can clean up some important fundamentals in technique and body position, that will help all of them tremendously.”
Hillsboro fared worse during the first match, where the team could only muster three individual wins and suffered a 54-15 loss to Minneapolis.
The Trojans found the most success in the middle divisions, with Garrett Helmer at 138, Jordan Bachman at 145, and Tristan Rathbone in the 152 division each winning their matches against both schools.
Dakota Ely was the only one traveling to McPherson on Saturday for a JV and girls tournament, but she placed second in the 136-pound division thanks to a 2-1 record.
Results: Charlie Major, 120 pounds, one win; Ely, 132 pounds, one win; Helmer, 138 pounds, two wins; Bachman, 145 pounds, two wins; Rathbone, 152 pounds, two wins; Ethan Plenert, 195 pounds, one win.
