Bring a turtle, a chair, a pedal tractor, and some cash for pies and other treats Sunday and Monday if you plan to make the most of Burdick’s Labor Day celebration, “Sunny Days on the Santa Fe Trail.”

Sunday will feature memorial recognitions service by Susie Talbot of Burdick United Methodist Church. Rolls and coffee provided by Council of Clubs will be served at the fire station.

A host of events will fill Monday.

Registration for a two-mile fun run or walk will begin at 8 a.m. The run will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Medals will be awarded for first and second place for each age group and trophies for the best man and woman competitors, organizer Diana Jost said.

Hebron Lutheran Church members will sell rolls, coffee, and baked goods at the fire station beginning at 9 a.m.

Vendor booths will open at 10 a.m. at the shelter house. Homemade ice cream will be served at Richard’s Garage for $2 for an eight ounce cup.

Denise Wasson, organizing vendor booths, said three had signed up so far. Reservations for booth space can be made through Saturday by calling Wasson at (316) 293-8788.

A turtle race will be at 11 a.m. on the tennis court. Races will be held by age — of the contestant, not the turtle.

A presentation about the historic Six Mile Creek Station on the Santa Fe Trail will play from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the American Legion hall. Bev Knopp, who owns the property where the station stood, will answer questions.

Burdick Hustlers 4-H club will serve a hamburger and hot dog lunch, and Cat Rodeo band will provide musical entertainment from 12:30 to 1:20 p.m.

A fundraiser pie auction will be the center of attention at noon.

Parade entrants will line up at 1:30 p.m. at the Methodist church parking lot, registration for a kids’ pedal tractor pull begins at the tennis courts.

The parade will start at 2 p.m. Prize nominations are being accepted by Gloria Martin at (785) 466-1348.

Flint Hills Community Band will play in the park after the parade.

The pedal tractor pull will begin at 3 p.m. Kids up to 13 can compete this year. Last year 12 year olds couldn’t participate in the canceled event.

A corn hole competition also will begin at 3 p.m. Parade prizes and an arbor swing winner will be announced.

A bounce house and mini train will be available for kids at no charge.
