Hope in the Heartland

Gracepoint Church, Peabody

“This shall be written for the generation to come, that a people yet to be created may praise the Lord.” (Psalm 102:18)

The “this” the Psalmist mentions above is referring to God’s merciful deliverance of His people from times of misery. It’s awe-inspiring and should be written down so that future generations could have a recorded reason to praise God. But it’s the use of the word “create” that is captivating. It’s the same word used multiple times in the first two chapters of Genesis to tell us what God did to bring this world into existence. God is pictured as the Creator with a specific agenda to His creation.

Psalms 102 reminds us that God is still the creator. He creates the people who make up each generation. That’s you. That’s me. That’s everyone. We are uniquely fashioned and brought into existence by a creator, not by random fate with a pinch of happenstance.

But we sin and alienate ourselves from our Creator. The New Testament is the written record of the merciful deliverance offered through the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. This time of year focuses on these events.

Now there’s a reason for praise!
