HRK buildings sold; restaurant possible

Staff writer

If Brent Miles’s dream comes true, an old gas station in front of HRK’s former main building will one day house a restaurant — specifically an Italian eatery with a patio and glass garage doors that would open during pleasant weather.

An entrepreneur, Miles bought all three buildings at the HRK “campus” at Main and Roosevelt Sts. The purchase happened at the end of the year.

Miles already has leased out the main building and a residential trailer on the property, he said.

HRK was a fixture on the corner, selling furniture, home goods, clothing, and more. It closed last year, and Pilsen Packrats auctioned off the contents during a series of sales.

“I’ve had my eye on this property since when we moved here. I was glad to be able to save that building,” Miles said, referring to the former gas station.

He has leased the main HRK building to a small textile manufacturing business.

While he hopes to open a restaurant, Miles for now is looking at bringing in food trucks and collaborating with Zach Collett’s Tap Truck, a mobile bar that can be rented for events.

Miles also has been renovating a building at 125 E. Main St. that houses Silk Salon. A coin laundry in the building is being improved, and four upstairs studio apartments will be available for rent within the month. Miles also is considering offering drop-off and pick-up dry cleaning, which previously had been provided in the building.
