Adeline Bernhardt
Adeline Susanna (Bentz) Bernhardt, 98, passed away Dec. 13 at Homestead Health Center in Wichita, Kansas.
Adeline will be remembered for her strength, dedication to her family, and her unwavering faith, fellowship, and commitment to the Lutheran church.
She was resourceful, organized, an excellent seamstress, a great cook, and she volunteered endless hours with her husband in the Tampa, Kansas community.
Adeline was born June 6, 1922, to Adolph and Anna Bentz on a farm near Tampa. She was baptized June 25, 1922, at North Tampa Lutheran Church and was confirmed June 5, 1935. She graduated from Tampa rural high school in May 1940, where she played in the band and orchestra, sang in the Glee Club quartet, and performed in plays.
After high school, she attended Emporia State Teacher’s College for one year and earned a three-year state teacher certificate. She taught for seven years because of a shortage of teachers during the war. She retired from Centre School District after 25 years of service in May 1987.
She married Ted Bernhardt June 4, 1944, at North Tampa Lutheran Church. The Lord blessed them with two children, Barney Ray Bernhardt and Kathy Kay Bernhardt.
Adeline was a woman of strong faith and she joined the Lutheran Ladies Aid, where she held many offices. She also was the organist at the Lutheran church in Tampa for 65 years, and she and Ted were youth counselors for many years.
She is survived by her son, Barney Bernhardt, and wife Linda of Wichita; sisters Leona Kleiber of Tampa, and Ellen Erickson of Tacoma, Washington; son-in-law Carl Hubbard of Wellington, Kansas; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Those preceding her in death included her husband, Ted Bernhardt, and her daughter, Kathy Hubbard.
A private service will be held for the family at 2 p.m. Dec. 18 at Yazel-Megli Funeral home in Marion, and it will be live-streamed.
A memorial fund has been established with St. John’s Lutheran Church in Tampa, and The Lutheran Hour. The family has requested that memorials be sent in Adeline Bernhardt’s name to Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, 205 Elm St. Marion, KS 66861.
