EXPANDED EULOGIES

Dick Verschelden

Memorial services will take place in the spring for Richard “Dick” Verschelden, 70, who died Dec. 14, 2020, at his home surrounded by family.

He was born July 17, 1950, in Manhattan, Kansas, the son of Ernest and Josephine (Newton) Verschelden.

He was raised in Peabody and attended Peabody-Burns High School, graduating with the class of 1968. He then attended Emporia State University.

Prior to retirement, Richard worked as a manufacturer for Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems.

On Nov. 26, 1994, in Newton, Richard married Martha “Marti” Lee. They celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary this year.

Richard loved spending time with family, particularly his grandchildren. He took every chance to spend time with them.

Richard could always be found out in the yard working, gardening, and making things with Liam.

He was never afraid of hard work and would often go help his best friend Fred out on the farm. Richard was an avid Chiefs fan and was excited to watch them win the 2020 Super Bowl.

Richard is survived by his wife, Marti Verschelden; sons, Brian Verschelden and Jason Avants; daughter, Bonnie (and husband, Ryan) Garcia; nine grandchildren; brother, Jim (and wife, Pat) Verschelden; and sister, Marilyn (and husband, Edward) Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Because of current COVID guidelines, a memorial service will take place next spring.

Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, in care of Petersen Funeral Home.
