Evelyn Obermeyer

Evelyn Harriett (Hess) Obermeyer, of Marion passed away April 23, 2019, and was laid to rest at Prairie Lawn in Peabody.

From her birth on Feb. 20, 1932, and throughout her life, Evelyn nourished people with laughter and love. Evelyn was born on a farm southwest of Peabody to James and Maude Hess. She attended a one-room schoolhouse and grew up without running water or electricity.

On June 8, 1952, Evelyn married Virgil Obermeyer. They moved to the Obermeyer family farm near Peabody to begin 56 years of marriage. Together they had four boys whom Evelyn cherished and celebrated. In 1965, they moved into a new home in Peabody that Virgil designed and built.

She moved to Marion in 2006 to be nearer to her sons and their families, after caring for Virgil during his last years.

Those left to honor and remember Evelyn are her four boys, Kirby, Galen, Mark (Marlene), and Brian (Gwen); one grandson, Edward James, “E.J.”; and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Virgil; parents James and Maude; brothers Harold, Lewis, Virgil; and a sister Marjorie (Hess) Hansen.

Evelyn will be remembered as a fun-loving, happy person who had a distinctive and easy laugh. The family extends gratitude to Salem Home in Hillsboro, who gave love and excellent care during Evelyn’s final days.

The Obermeyers will host a get-together this summer to celebrate her life.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Evelyn’s name to The Nature Conservancy of Kansas.
