Gary Soyez
A memorial service celebrating the life of Gary Lee Soyez, 80, a man of adventure, integrity, and quiet strength who passed away peacefully Jan. 29, 2024, at his home in El Dorado surrounded by his loving family, will be 11 a.m. March 2, 2024, at First Church of the Nazarene, 202 N. Taylor St., El Dorado.
Gary was born on May 21, 1943, in Marion to Emile Soyez Jr. and Irene (Reiger) Soyez.
He spent his formative years on a farm in Cedar Point, where the family tended to a buffalo herd, instilling in him a deep appreciation for nature and hard work.
After graduating from Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, with a degree in accounting, Gary answered the call to serve his country, joining the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969 and bravely serving in Vietnam.
On Oct. 7, 1978, he married the love of his life, Ada Hash Jones, with whom he shared countless adventures, including driving Formula One cars in Las Vegas.
Gary’s professional journey led him to a fulfilling career in trucking with Groendyke for 27 years, traversing the roads of the US and Canada.
He was not only a dedicated worker but also a devoted member of his community, belonging to organizations such as Capt. Edgar Dale American Legion Post 81, the VFW, the NRA, and the El Dorado Senior Citizens Center.
His faith was paramount, as he attended First Church of the Nazarene in El Dorado for nearly five decades.
An avid outdoorsman, Gary found solace in fishing and hunting, and he had a passion for collecting various items at auctions, including old cars to house his growing collections.
His distinctive hat collection was a testament to his travels, each hat holding memories of places he visited.
Beyond his adventures and hobbies, Gary will be remembered most for his genuine love for people. He was a friend to all, known for his infectious smile and his quiet, yet profound wisdom.
Gary leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness. He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Ada; his children, Andi Thomas (and husband Brad), Chris Jones, Scott Jones (and wife Pam), Bradley Jones (and wife Billi), and Darrell Jones (and wife Kacee); his siblings, Jerry Lou Robinson (and husband Steve) and Terry Soyez; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emile and Irene, and his brother, Ralph Soyez.
In honoring Gary’s memory, let us carry forward his spirit of adventure, kindness, and love for others.
