Martha Kortje
Private graveside services will be held in Peru, Indiana, for Martha Louise Day Kortje, 90, of Peabody, Kansas, who died March 11, 2019, at Peabody Health & Rehab.
Martha was born in Peru, Indiana, on April 11, 1928 to Alfred and Martha Day. She married Richard Kortje in 1948 in Peru, Indiana. Martha had two children, son Frank Kortje of Colorado, and daughter Sabrina Mills.
Martha and her late husband Richard owned and operated Pride Machine Shop in southern California for over 15 years.
When she moved to Peabody she helped open the Walmart in Newton, Kansas, and worked there for seven years greeting everyone she met with her friendly smile.
Many years before becoming a residence of Peabody Health & Rehab Martha worked there as an aide, loving and caring for several individuals where she made many close friends.
Martha loved to make people laugh and enjoyed being a member of the Red Hatters Club. She was also a member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary in Peabody. She was known to make friends easily wherever she went, and people loved Martha.
She loved to go fishing, boating, shopping, attend church, and spend time with her family.
Martha is survived by her son Frank Kortje, and wife Jan, of Colorado; five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Martha Day, husband Richard Kortje, daughter Sabrina Mills, brother Alfred, and sister Ruby.
