‘Rannie’ Schmidt

Memorial services for Randolph “Rannie” Schmidt, 91, Goessel, who passed away Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2023, at Bethesda Home, will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024, at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church, Goessel.

Cremation is planned.

He was born May 29, 1932, in Goessel to Peter J. and Katherine (Unruh) Schmidt. He was the youngest child, with four older siblings: Elsie, Dorothy, Harvey, and Bill.

He was united in marriage Sept. 4, 1953, to Meribeth Boese at Goessel Mennonite Church. They raised two children, Cindy and Russ.

Rannie was a lifelong dairy and grain farmer in rural Goessel. He also spent many years as a high school and college basketball referee, which he enjoyed immensely. After retiring from farming, he greatly enjoyed driving a school bus for Goessel schools.

He was a member of Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church and was active as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, youth sponsor, and janitor.

Rannie is survived by his wife of 70 years, Meribeth Schmidt of Goessel, and children Cindy Hastings of Newton, and Russ Schmidt (and Bart) of San Francisco.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and son-in-law Gene Hastings.
