Stephen Frye

A memorial service for Stephen Reed Frye, 79, who died May 30, 2022, at his home in Peabody, will be 11 a.m. June 25, 2022, at Peabody United Methodist Church.

Following Stephen’s wishes, cremation will take place. Stephen’s final resting place will be at Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Peabody.

He was born Sept. 6, 1942, in Burlington, Iowa, to William and Margaret (Chalupa) Frye and was united in marriage Jan. 5, 1964, to Marta Lorber. She preceded him in death in 2016.

Stephen was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1961 to 1965.

He was employed with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration from 1973 to 1996.

After retiring from there, he became self-employed as a health and safety consultant and a truck driver.

Stephen enjoyed being outdoors — camping, fishing, boating, hunting, grilling, gardening, and just hanging out on his back porch with family, friends, and his loyal companion, Skippy.

He was a member of Peabody United Methodist Church and Peabody American Legion, where he served for a time as commander until he was no longer able to fulfill those duties.

Survivors include children Christopher Frye of Hillsboro and Dana Shaw (and husband Travis) of Durham; grandchildren Emily, Samantha, Adam, Tiffany, Lindsey, and Ciara; and great-grandchild Paisley.

Other survivors include brother Bill Frye of Topeka and sister Barbara Frye of West Burlington, Iowa.

His sister, Bonnie Van Engen-McCullip, preceded him in death.

A memorial in Stephen’s memory has been established with the Peabody American Legion Post’s Avenue of Flags.
