June Jost
June Jost, 92, of Marion, died March 4 at St. Luke Hospital, Marion.
Born Aug. 31, 1917, in Hillsboro, he was the eighth of nine children born to Peter and Margaret (Klassen) Jost.
June graduated from Creswell School and worked on the family farm with his parents.
In 1936, the family relocated to the Youngtown Community, where he continued to farm.
On Oct. 28, 1938, he married Lois Scharenberg at Youngtown Church. The young couple farmed and later operated a dairy, until the mid 1960s, when June decided to get into law enforcement.
He worked as a policeman in Marion, and later was employed as undersheriff. He was elected as Marion County Sheriff in 1970, serving for 14 years. He retired Jan. 1, 1985.
June and Lois were members of Youngtown Church and later transferred membership to EUB Church of Marion, which later became Eastmoor United Methodist Church.
With the assistance of his granddaughter, June wrote his biography, “Days of June.”
He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Peter, John, Susie Schmidt, Dave, Herb, Jake, Harold, and Carl; and son-in-law, Bob Ames.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Jost of Marion; a son, Dean of Minneapolis; three daughters, Gaila Falls of Hot Springs Village, Ark., Donna Ames of Derby, and Rita Janzen of Sedgwick; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Monday at Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Marion.
Interment was in Marion Cemetery.
Memorial funds have been established with Marion Assisted Living and Marion Senior Center in care of Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion.
