King takes second at Herington

Hillsboro’s 145-pound wrestler, Travis King, took second and the Trojans placed 11th of 15 teams Saturday at a Herington tournament.

Now with an 11-5 record for the season, King accepted a bye in the first round, pinned opponents in the second, third and fourth rounds, and won by decision in the semifinals, only to be defeated 8-4 by a Chase County opponent in the finals.

At 120 pounds, Mac Bartel earned a fifth place finish, going 3-2 for the tournament. However, although most other Trojan wrestlers logged wins, no one else placed individually, and Hillsboro placed 11th, earning 55 points.

Coach Scott O’Hare said Hillsboro wrestlers saw some of the toughest competition they had seen all season. The tournament format did not favor a small team such as Hillsboro’s, but he said it did afford wrestlers more matches and chances to learn.

“As a group, they know what to do,” O’Hare said. “They just have to get more confident, do it more explosively, and learn to transition between moves more seamlessly.”

Hillsboro wrestles again Friday and Saturday at Halstead.
