Lady Trojan spikers capture third

The Hillsboro High School volleyball team found success Saturday competing in the Trojans Invitational, capturing third place out of eight teams.

As the sixth seed, the Trojans went 2-3 on Saturday, tripping the Chapman Fighting Irish in the consolation bracket finale, 2-0.

The Irish opened the tournament by outlasting the Trojans in the first match of pool play, 2-1.

After dropping the first set 25-15, Hillsboro forced a third set with a 25-18 win.

But eventual pool play winner Chapman held on in the finale for a 25-23 victory.

The Trojans had to look elsewhere for their first victory of the tournament after also tumbling in three to Circle.

The Lady T-Birds captured the first set 25-23 with Hillsboro prevailing in the second, 25-17.

The final set bounced in Circle’s favor, 25-18.

Hillsboro got its first victory after rebounding from a 25-22 setback by Augusta for 25-21 and 25-22 wins to finish runner-up in pool play.

Against pool B champion Minneapolis, the fourth-seeded Lady Lions made short work of Hillsboro with 25-15 and 25-19 wins to advance to the final game against top-seed and eventual champion Andale.

The Trojans avenged the opening loss to Chapman with 27-25 and 25-17 scores for third place.

The performance lifts Hillsboro to 15-19 on the year.

Hillsboro closed out the regular season in a Tuesday dual against Sterling and Hutchinson Trinity before opening sub-state action Saturday at Marion.
