Lady Trojans earn third-place with two wins at Cheney

Strong fourth quarter helps Hillsboro outlasts Winfield

The Hillsboro High School Lady Trojans basketball team completed the Cardinal Classic Saturday at Cheney, holding off the Winfield Lady Vikings, 29-26, in the third-place game.

Hillsboro overcame an 8-5 deficit and a 14-11 halftime margin, using a 12-8 fourth quarter to grind out the victory and stand at 2-2 on the season.

Dakota Kaufman paced the Trojans with a game-high 12 points in a contest that only saw four players get into the scorebook.

The Trojans ended the classic with a 2-1 record, nipping the Smokey Valley Lady Vikings in round one.

Hillsboro lost its lone game of the classic Friday night, falling decisively to the eventual runner-up and hosting Cardinals, 47-19.

Cheney started fast and never looked back, jumping out to a 13-2 lead after the first quarter and a commanding 27-8 margin at halftime.

The Trojans suffered through one of its toughest nights of shooting in some time, scoreless from outside and just 5-of-15 from the free-throw line.

Cheney had the game sewed-up midway through the third quarter, eventually going up 37-12.

Abby Humber led the Trojans with a modest seven points as Hillsboro could only muster seven field goals.

HHS closes out 2008 Friday night with a 6 p.m. tip-off against the hosting Sterling Lady Black Bears.
