Lady Trojans win all five matches

The season got off to a quick start Saturday for the Hillsboro High School Lady Trojans’ volleyball team as it captured the Mid-Central Activities Association pre-season tournament at Marion.

Hillsboro knocked off five opponents during the grueling day, pushing its record to 7-0 on the year.

The Trojans made short work of Lyons and Collegiate in pool play, vanquishing the Lady Lions, 25-7 and 25-21.

Nobody pushed the Trojans past two games until the championship match.

Lyons was eliminated in the next round, setting up the match between Hillsboro and the Lady Spartans.

Collegiate put up a better fight than the Lions, but the Trojans moved on with a pair of 25-22 and 25-20 victories.

The Ellinwood Lady Eagles finished second in their pool, but they weren’t much of a match for the Trojans, falling 25-19 and 25-21.

The Hesston Lady Swathers traditionally have been a speed bump for Hillsboro, and they’re a team coach Sandy Arnold is leery of.

The Trojans advanced into the final game against Haven, dispatching Hesston, 25-21 and 25-20.

The Lady Wildcats had to play three matches against Collegiate, tumbling 25-16 in the second, but made it out with a deciding 25-23 win.

After posting a 25-14 victory in the first match, the Trojans were on the short end of a 25-16 score as the Wildcats stayed alive.

With the title still hanging in the balance in the deciding match, Dakota Kaufman dashed Haven’s hope, spiking the Wildcats for a 25-23 win.

The Trojans hosted a triangular Tuesday against Marion and Hesston. Results from Tuesday were unavailable at press time.

The varsity then enjoys a short break before returning to action on Sept 23.
