Lakes offer peaceful getaways, special events

Two lakes in Marion County offer refreshment and a place to get away from stress or a busy schedule.

Marion County Lake, one mile east and two miles south of Marion, has a car cruise, boat parade, and fireworks show scheduled for Saturday.

The car cruise and boat parade will begin at 7 p.m.

Fireworks will begin right after dark, lake director Isaac Hett said.

“Marion Fire Department will be out here taking donations at the entrance to the lake,” Hett said. “They are also going to bring out some trucks to park up by the fireworks.”

The fireworks will be shot on the east side of the lake near a radio-controlled airplane field.

All fireworks will be aerials.

“There will not be a ground display, so everyone can see it,” Hett said.

A month later, the 14th annual Bluegrass at the Lake is planned for Aug. 5 and 6.

The festival offers music, food vendors, a silent auction, a cornhole tournament, and a chance to mingle with others.

This year’s lineup of bands includes Pretend Friend, Fast

Food Junkies, Bad Mother Hubbard, Old Fangled, Arbuckle-Woods Trio, Sally and the Hurts, Taylor Martin Band, Taylor Kline, and Lizzie Blue and the Fools. Admission is $10.

Festi-Cab will provide onsite transportation for a small charge.

Year round, the lake offers a remote-control airplane strip and a disc golf course.

Boating, camping, fishing, and swimming are popular

pastimes at the lake, which features a heated fishing dock.

A lake hall and shelter houses may be reserved by calling the lake office at (620) 382-3240.

Marion Reservoir, west of Marion, also offers boating, camping, fishing, picnicking, and swimming. The reservoir also offers hunting, sightseeing, and nature trails.

Anglers can reel in crappie, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and flathead, walleye, white bass, and wiper.

Hunting is available in clearly marked game management areas.

Reservations are required for campsites. They are being accepted at (877) 444-5777.
