Completing a game postponed Dec. 2 by a power failure, Goessel built on its 14-11 lead from before the blackout and coasted to a 63-43 victory Saturday over Marion.
Goessel senior Jake Wiens was on the receiving end of several fast breaks and contributed nine consecutive points for the Bluebirds in the first half.
Marions Cooper Bailey dropped in eight points in the second quarter.
Noah Schrag led all scorers with 17 points for Goessel, Jake Wiens added 14.
Bailey scored 14 for Marion, with Jack Lanning, Carson Krause, and Caden Wilhelm each scoring 7.
Marion loses
in overtime
Marion also lost Friday’s road game against Belle Plaine, 61-51 in overtime. Wilhelm led Marion in scoring with 22 points and 9 rebounds, Lanning had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Bailey had 9 points and 6 assists.
“As a team, we play three really good quarters, and now we are trying to put four quarters’ together,” coach Donald Raymer said.
Goessel notches first league win
Goessel coasted to a 62-39 victory Friday in its first Wheat State League game of the season against Rural Vista.
Four three-pointers in the second period by four different Bluebirds opened up a 27-15 lead at half, and the Bluebirds were never threatened.
Three Bluebirds hit double figures in the game with Schrag connecting for 14 points, Javin Schmidt, 11, and Joey Lapp, 10.
Centre down
to seven players
Centre was down to seven players Friday against Canton-Galva. The tall, aggressive Eagles put on a full press and came away with multiple steals in their 72-34 victory over Centre.
Karsen Kroupa scored the first Cougar points on several long passes over the heads of the pressing Eagles, producing a roar from the crowd.
Robert Spohn led Centre with 14 points, Gentri Holub and Nick Krch, with eight each. All three had five rebounds each.
Hillsboro
drops another
The ninth-ranked Trojan boys fell to 2-3 Thursday with Southeast of Saline knocking off it’s second of two preseason No. 1 teams, 56-37.
Southeast of Saline isn’t the front-runner in Class 3A for nothing. The purple Trojans have now upended three ranked opponents, including the defending Class 3A state champions and the team responsible for Hillsboro’s lone blemish of a year ago, arch-rival Hesston.
