To the editor:

Please know that many journalists around the state, nation, and world are standing with you as you and your staff continue to publish your newspaper.

I would like to encourage people in Marion County to support you and to show compassion to all those involved.

As someone who grew up in Marion County and as a long-time subscriber to the Record, I appreciate articles that you and your staff have written about what city, county and other public entities are doing.

It’s important for you to be the eyes and ears of your community — to keep people informed.

I also want to express my condolences on the death of your mother. I met her and your dad at the 2002 International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors convention. I was pleased your dad was given the Eugene Cervi Award, established to recognize a newspaper editor who has consistently acted on the conviction that “good journalism begets good government.”

I would have to say that you learned that lesson early. A former colleague, who worked with you in Milwaukee Sentinel, called you a “bulldog” when it came to doing diligent research and holding public officials accountable for their actions. Like father, like son.

Thank you for the important work you do to ensure that our democracy stays strong.
