Lions club erects food building

Fair-goers attending will have easier access to concessions this week, thanks to Hillsboro Lions Club.

“Our other concessions stand was shot,” said Ken Kohlenberg, Lions Club member and fair prep volunteer. “Now we will have three places to serve customers.”

Previously, Lions Club members served hamburgers, funnel cakes, drinks, and other items from two stands: one on the southwest corner of the arena, the other on the northeast corner. The new stand is at the northwest entrance of the arena.

Construction by Merle Funk, overseen by Marvin Funk, neared completion Thursday, with just a few peak ends and eaves needing cover. Inside, some finish work on walls remained.

Kohlenberg and Elfrieda Funk, both of Hillsboro, volunteered to clean refrigerators and move food accessories for activities in the coming week.

“The Lions Club sponsors the Leos and the Boy Scouts,” Kohlenberg said. “We hope to get those kids in here helping sell concessions for the fair, but we will be here, too.”

Arena fair events included rodeos and tractor pulls on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and the demolition derby on Saturday.
