Lyons rolls past Hillsboro girls
It was a new year and a fresh start for the Hillsboro girls’ basketball team as they took the court Tuesday for a home tilt against Lyons.
The Trojans looked new and fresh as they broke out to a 20-17 first quarter lead, but rolled back the clock to 2014 as turnovers and poor shooting snuffed out the promising start.
Tara Proffitt popped a three from the top of the key to put the Trojans up 3-2. After initial trouble against the Lions’ full-court zone press, Alex Ratzlaff scored on a layup and sank two free throws after being fouled on another layup attempt.
A Ratzlaff 3-pointer put the Trojans up 13-8. Callie Linnens tallied a free throw, and Ratzlaff and Proffitt hit threes on consecutive possessions to give Hillsboro its biggest lead of the game, 20-12.
At that point, however, the Trojans cooled down as quickly as they had started. Lyons reeled off a 16-2 run stretching into the second quarter, taking the lead 28-22. Two free throws from Rebecca Kaufman with a minute left in the half drew the Trojans to within one, 32-33.
The Lions took control in the third quarter, as turnovers mounted and shots wouldn’t drop for the Trojans. Brooklyn Wiens’ free throw with just under five minutes remaining was the first Trojans point of the second half. Hillsboro scored just six points in the third quarter, falling behind 38-48.
Lyons outscored Hillsboro 17-8 in the final period to win by 19, 65-46.
While the Trojans shot 46 percent from the field and hit four threes in the first quarter, they cooled to 25 percent in the second half with no threes. Hillsboro had 26 turnovers, which Lyons converted into 22 points.
Ratzlaff led the Trojans in scoring with 17, and Proffitt scored 10.
Next up for the Trojans is a home contest Friday against Larned.
