Make a splash! Area's pools, lakes offer good times and a chance to beat the heat

Staff writer

Nothing says summer like splashing in a pool. From fancy to plain, the county offers several options for water play.

Hillsboro’s Family Aquatic Center is at 600 W. D St.

Built in 2006, it features zero-depth entry access, a two-story high slide, two diving boards, and a toddler play area with slides and spray features.

Admission costs $1 for a day pass for ages 3 and younger and $4 for a day pass for ages 4 and older.

Season passes are $210 for a family or $110 for a single. Lap swim passes are $75. Caregiver passes are $40.

The pool can be rented for $50 an hour for up to 25 swimmers and $2 an hour for each additional swimmer.

Weekday hours for swimming are 1 to 5 p.m. Adult lap swimming is from 5 to 6 p.m. The pool reopens for public swimming time from 6 to 8 p.m.

Saturday hours are 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday hours are 2 to 7 p.m.

Weekday swim season ends in August because pool employees return to school activities, but the pool is open on weekends through Labor Day.

Marion Sports and Aquatic Center is open from 5:15 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

The indoor pool is a six-lane competition pool and has a slide, baby pool, and spray pad area. It is equipped with solar heating and ion-water systems.

On weekdays, lap swim is 5:15 to 8 a.m.; aqua aerobics, 8 to 9 a.m.; swim team, 9 a.m. to noon; open swimming, 1 to 5 p.m.; and lap swimming, 5 to 6 p.m.

On Saturday, lap swimming is noon to 1 p.m.; open swimming is 1 to 5 p.m., and the pool is available for rental 5 to 8 p.m.

On Sunday, open swimming is 2 to 5 p.m. and pool rental is 5 to 8 p.m.

The pool will be closed June 11 and 25 for a swim meet.

The 48,000 square-foot Sports and Aquatic Center also has a 2,000-seat competition gym, two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, and a running and walking track around the courts.

The outside is open when weather permits.

Peabody’s swimming pool is in City Park. Admission is $1.50 to $2, depending on age.

Florence’s swimming pool, at 8th and Barker Sts., is open Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend.

Want to swim but also spend time at the lake? Both Marion County Park and Lake and Marion Reservoir have swimming areas.
