Man, dog stay active using tandem tricycle
Marion senior Don Berg does low-impact tandem-tricycling — and he includes his dog, Lady, when he exercises.
“It’s good for stopping whenever you want, and the dog won’t pull you around,” he said. “It has a lot of miles on it.”
He adopted Lady as a six-month-old rescue puppy, and Berg said they have been going for regular rides since then.
“She’s nine and always ready to go,” he said. “She’s not as spry as she used to be, but she still likes to go all the time.”
Despite Lady’s age, the pair rides a few miles around town most days, Berg said.
“It’s just around town, but we do it whenever we want,” he said. “If the weather’s cold or windy, we don’t go.”
Berg used to ride between three and five miles a day until his odometer broke, but said he’s logged around 6,000 miles so far.
“It keeps your legs limbered up quite a bit,” he said. “It’s good to ride a bike any time.”
While less common than the typical bicycle, Berg enjoys the tandem tricycle because it is easy to ride.
“It’s really easy to pedal,” he said. “I sit there and she walks along the curb.”
