Man sees red when picking prized vehicles

Staff writer

Wayne Ollenburger, 82, of Hillsboro has added another bright red car to his collection of antique vehicles.

He owns a 1971 Chevy Cheyenne half-ton pickup and a 1980 Corvette.

He bought the 1938 Chevy Master Deluxe from a Newton dealership 2½ years ago, after it was traded by its owner for a special pickup.

“We drove by the dealer’s lot and saw that car every time we were in Newton,” Ollenburger said. “I finally called the dealer and asked about it. I went to see it and bought it.”

He said that type of vehicle is hard to find, and several others had inquired about it after he had bought it.

The original two-door Chevy has a V-8 engine and automatic transmission. It has limited air conditioning.

Ollenburger installed louder mufflers and had the air intake gaskets replaced to prevent oil leakage.

“I liked cars when I was a kid,” Ollenburger said. “I was draining oil from vehicles at age 12 and became a self-taught mechanic.”

He said he and his wife have always lived frugally. It has paid off in his retirement years, as he has enough savings to purchase the antiques.

The 1938 Chevy is strictly a show vehicle, as are his others.

He keeps it insured and tagged.

“It drives nice,” he said.
