Marion approves beer, wine events

Staff writer

Two events at which beer or wine sales will be allowed were approved Monday by Marion City Council.

Megan Jones, co-owner of Bill and Essie’s BBQ, asked council members to grant a temporary beer license so her business could set up a beer garden for Marion Merchants’ Falloween celebration.

Marion Advancement Campaign chairman Mike Powers said his organization wanted a temporary liquor license to sponsor a wine tasting and auction Nov. 4 at Marion Community Ballroom.

Powers said he did not understand why there was any concern about the event, which has happened for several years, but city administrator Brogan Jones answered the city code forbids sale of alcohol on city property.

Council members also voted Monday to spend $3,050 to repair a grass runway at the city’s airport. The runway has seen increased use because of cracking of the airport’s hard-surfaced runway.

The city is seeking a grant to pay for repair to that runway.

Council members also approved spending $3,400 to buy a metal sign to put on the south side of US-56 along the city limits.
