Mary's Mats now Wooley Red Hen

Mary’s Mats and More at 107 E. Grand, changed owners Monday. Long-time owner Mary Lancaster said she was approached by Hillsboro native Micki Watson earlier this year about buying the business.

“She offered, and I thought my husband is going to retire in a few years, what if I can’t sell it then?” Lancaster said.

After several meetings, the two decided on a course of action. Lancaster officially gave up the business Monday. Watson reopened today with Lancaster’s help until she gets up to speed.

“Even after 17 years, I still enjoy doing it,” Lancaster said. “I’ll be here off and on helping especially around Christmas.”

Lancaster said Watson came to her to buy the business after getting tired of driving to her job in Wichita every day. Watson works in the framing department at Joann’s Fabrics.

“She was tired of the drive but didn’t want to open anything local because she didn’t want to compete against local businesses,” Lancaster said.

Lancaster is looking forward to having more free time to catch up with her house, grandkids, and quilting.

“There’s no lack of projects for me,” she said. “I’m looking forward for more time as a grandma. There’s always something or someone around to fill your free time.”

The shop changed names to the Wooley Red Hen when Watson took over.

“I’m looking forward to her being here, and keeping the shop in town,” Lancaster said. “I’m happy she’s keeping the shop here so people don’t have to drive into Wichita for another service. I think she will do very well.”
