Mechanic retires after 44 years

Staff writer

In the 44 years of servicing vehicles at Hillsboro Ford, Kim Kaufman has seen a lot of change.

“It’s changing faster all the time with new technology,” Kaufman said last week. “You learn something new every day.”

Friday was Kaufman’s last day to learn something, as it was the day he retired as the dealership’s service manager.

Customers and close friends stopped by for a chat, a few cupcakes, and to wish Kaufman well even after an open house reception for him had officially ended.

His last day was by no means a slow one. He was called into the garage shortly after the reception to work on a red sedan suspended six feet off the ground.

His retirement is looking to be much easier.

“I went from four grandkids to 13,” Kaufman said, referencing his recent marriage to Beth Kaufman. “I have a lot of ball games and dance recitals to go to.”
