Area law enforcement officers were standing in front of Marion High School Tuesday in preparation for a demonstration by Westboro Baptist Church members and a possible counter protest. The demonstration proved to be uneventful and the church members returned to Topeka.

Assistant city administrator Doug Kjellin was appointed as permanent city administrator Monday evening by Marion City Council.

Cole Lewman is the Record’s Marion High School Athlete of the Week. The only match Lewman lost Saturday at the Hesston invitational wrestling tournament was to eventual tournament champion Alex Thibault of Halstead.

An article by staff writer Ben Kleine tells about former Marion resident Amanda Steiner and her accomplishments. A victim of a tragic automobile accident as a teen-ager that left her paralyzed, she has accomplished much and currently is working on her master’s degree at the University of Kansas.

By correctly answering a question about Africa, sixth grader Tori Smith won the Marion Elementary School Geography Bee on Friday. Tyler Arocha was runner-up.

Eleven-week-old Marlie Pagenkopf is pictured as she got her first look at Santa Claus during his appearance Saturday at Lincolnville’s Community Christmas. Mark and Julie Pagenkopf of Lincolnville are her parents.

Brett Billings, a 2008 Marion High School graduate, has received the highly competitive Maggin Family Creative and Performing Arts Fellowship at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. Eric and Myrta Billings of Marion are his parents.
