Marion County Commission took an unusual step Monday of overruling Marion County Planning Commission’s recommendation to reject a conditional use permit application for rental cabins at Marion County Park and Lake.

Officials continue to search Marion Reservoir for the body of a missing boater identified as Timothy Kliewer, 71, of Hillsboro. Kliewer’s sailboat was found overturned Thursday afternoon with no one on board.

Marion High School golf team won the regional tournament held Monday in Marion. Landon Leiker led the competitors with a round of 82. He shot 39 on the front nine holes and 43 on the back nine. Hogan Lovelady followed with 82, Adam Molleker, 96, and Wiley Lundy, 97.

The contribution of the Pearl Baxter estate of $75,000 for the creation of a pilot’s lounge at Marion airport and the 65th anniversary of the founding of the Flying Farmers will be celebrated Tuesday at the airport.

Marion City Council approved a recommendation submitted by the airport authority board Monday that Marion airport be known as Marion Municipal Airport Baxter Field.

Staff member Rowena Plett writes about 21-year-old Duane Unruh of rural Peabody who, for a 4-H project, began raising and showing hogs. He wanted to do something different so his father suggested raising chickens.

This project has progressed over the years to a business he calls Unruh Pasture-Fresh Chicken. Unruh is not sure what the future holds, but his dream is to produce grass-feed beef, pork, duck, and turkey in addition to chicken.
