Marion County Economic Development Director Teresa Huffman and Leadership Marion County President Cheri Bentz of Tampa represented Marion County May 7 and 8 at the Kansas Sampler Festival in Leavenworth.

Raelene Allen and Randy Regnier were named as Marion High School female and male senior athletes of the year Monday at the annual athletic banquet. Regnier also received the LeRoy Dreier Scholarship.

Gina Overton of Marion is pictured as she visits with 19-year-old Yashen Mu of Xingang, China, as he walks across Marion County on his way to Nebraska.

Mu, a student at Wichita State University, wants to meet people and learn more about the American culture. He hopes to bring his parents to Kansas for their senior years.

Junior Whitney Gordon is this week’s Marion High School Athlete of the Week. Whitney tied for first in the high jump Friday at the 3A regional meet. She set a personal best with a leap of 5’4”.

A reception will be held Sunday at Centre High School to honor Cary Granzow who is retiring after teaching agriculture education there for 31 years.

A feature article by staff writer Rowena Plett concerns Jay Plank and his son Justin, both of Ramona, who are working together to restore the former Rosebank Brethren in Christ Church northwest of Ramona. Jay Plank owns the building and would like to see it used as a nondenominational church or a community center.

Marion Elementary School students didn’t let rain and cool temperature deter them from having fun Thursday at the school’s annual field day. Second-graders Jaden Slifer and Emma Calhoun are pictured as they hop their way to the finish line in a sack race.
