Even though Marion County residents were dancing in the streets, thinking rain would bring cooler temperatures, the relief was short lived. Temperatures returned to triple digits by Sunday and set a date record high of 109.4 on Tuesday.

Jerry Ewing is recognized this week by St. Luke Hospital and Living Center and Marion County Home Care as their outstanding employee for the 3rd quarter of 2011. Ewing is the leading radiological technologist at St. Luke.

The 12-year-old Cottonwood Valley All-stars were eliminated from the Cal Ripken regional tournament Sunday in Marion, losing their final game to Ottawa, 11-1. Marion’s rooting interest then averted to the team from Waite Park, Minnesota, whose players had been staying in local homes. Waite Park went on to win the tournament.

The Fort Riley Army Band will present a concert from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Aug 13 at Marion County Park and Lake. Volunteer firefighters will be selling concessions.

Teresa Hoffman, the county’s economic development director, is accepting reservations for a free workshop
from 10 to 11 a.m. Aug. 23 at Marion Community Center to explore capitalizing on tourism. Richard Smalley, tourism marketing manager with the Travel and Tourism division of the Kansas Department of Commerce, will be the speaker.
