Staff writer David Colburn tells how Dr. Mike Reynolds is an Emporia-based ophthalmologist who provides cataract surgery and related services to patients at satellite clinics from Chanute to Herington. Reynolds has been providing services at St. Luke Hospital in Marion since 2000 with clinic visits every month and performing surgeries typically every other month.

The National Catholic Rural Life Conference has selected St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Pilsen for its 2011 Christmas card. The front altar and backdrop is featured on the front of the card, and a photo and information about the church is on the back. The church was built in 1916. The NCRLC was formed in 1923 to serve the rural church, rural people, and their communities.

Marion High School sophomore Caitlyn Maloney composed the first place essay for the Voice of Democracy competition sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6958 in Marion and its women’s auxiliary.

Preservationist Jay Plank of Ramona recently purchased the Lincolnville United Methodist Church building from the church conference. The congregation disbanded in May.

“I want to keep the building there” Plank said. He and his son, Justin, are continuing work to restore and preserve the Rosebank Brethren in Christ Church building northeast of Ramona, which he purchased last winter.

Staff writer Jennifer Stultz tells how Brian Meeks of Goessel drives and maintains a 90-inch stretch limo on weekends. He transports wedding party guests and riders requesting designated driver services to Wichita and Newton.

Jim Horinek is pictured as he cuts a piece of cowhide into the shape of a moccasin sole at his Family Shoe Repair shop in Pilsen. Horinek considers no job too small, too big, or too hard.
