Rock band Starship will present the headline concert of Chingawassa Days 2012, the event’s committee announced Monday. Starship, which grew out of Jefferson Airplane, is a newer act than previous rock bands to headline the event. “It will be the first rock act presented that actually had the majority of their hits in the ’80s and ’90s instead of ’60s and ’70s,” committee spokesman Clayton Garnica said.

Rosse Case was recognized Feb. 8 when Skip Sieger presented him with a 60-year membership pin at the annual Masonic Lodge past master’s banquet.

Winners of the 2011 Conservation Awards announced this week are Mervin and Leona Deines, continuous conservation; Matthew Kirkpatrick, young conservation farmer; Terry Vinduska and John D. and Jean Anderson, banker awards; Jerry and Enid Cady, grassland buffer award; and Marion Conservation District supervisors Joel Suderman and Steve Bartel.

Carissa Shields, Centre eighth grader, won the Marion County Spelling Bee Feb. 8 in Marion. Juliana Schrag, fifth grader, and Lanna Wagner, seventh grader, both from Goessel, finished second and third, respectively
