Marion Police Department will join other Kansas law enforcement agencies in an attempt to curb teenage deaths in automobile accidents. In 2010, 51 teens were killed in car crashes, 75 percent of those teen-agers were not wearing seatbelts.

With 24 days left, Marion County Park and Lake Superintendent Steve Hudson has his hands full getting ready for the attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the most people roasting marshmallows at one time.

Grass has been burned off at the chosen spot for the roast and limbs, knocked down in a 2011 storm, are being made into a pile 6 feet wide and 3 feet tall for the bonfire. Hudson says other items, including parking for participants, still need to be finalized.

An article by staff writer Jennifer Stultz tells how the Brad Vannocker family, including children and grandchildren, have been raising pigs on their farm south of Hillsboro and showing them across the state and country.

The Centre Elementary School fifth and sixth grade choir, directed by Lynley Remy, is pictured on the front page as they provide entertainment Feb. 21 at the annual meeting of Flint Hills Rural Electric Cooperative at Centre High School.

Marion County Parents as Teachers, Marion County Head Start, Safe Kids, and Families and Communities Together will offer a morning of games, activities, and swimming at the annual Daddy Olympics Saturday at the USD 408 Sports and Aquatics Center.

Hillsboro Elementary School first-graders Emma Noble and Canyon Goekler are shown as they feed a miniature horse at a petting zoo set up on the school playground by Hillsboro FFA officers. Preschoolers and first graders moved among eight stations petting, holding and feeding a variety of farm animals.
