“Volunteers: The Backbone of Our Community” will be this year’s theme for the 96th annual Old Settlers Day parade. Weekend activities will begin Sept. 28.

A little limestone building west of the office at Marion County Park and Lake originally housed a laundry and dry cleaning business established and operated by Civilian Conservation Corps enrollees in 1938 and 1939. It recently was refurbished by lake residents and will open Sept. 30 as Marion County Park and Lake Museum.

Marion won the eighth annual Bruce-Crofoot golf tournament Sept. 8 and 9. The tournament pits players from Marion Country Club and Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course against each other. Marion now leads the series, 5-3.

Five generations posed recently for a family photo. They are great-grandmother Ramona Beisel, grandfather Alan Beisel, mother Chevon (Beisel) Doll holding baby Emily Lauren Doll, and great-great-grandmother Frances Stuchlik.

Marion High School’s cross-country team will play host Thursday to an meet at Marion County Park and Lake. Varsity returnees who will lead the Warriors are Tacy Taylor, Louis Holt, Ryan Jones, Camille Christensen, Jaclyn DeForest, and Brooke Johnson.

Twenty-four members of 20th Century Club met Aug. 27 at Central Park, Marion, for a Mexican fiesta.
