For a visitor from Newton, it wasn’t a good day of fishing at Marion County Lake. All that was caught was his pickup, which rolled into the lake shortly after he parked it at the fishing dock. Pictures on the front page show the truck being recovered with assistance from a team of divers from Augusta and Darvin Markley’s wrecker.

It didn’t just rain this past Wednesday morning. It poured, poured, and poured, wreaking havoc in the northern half of the county, causing flooding and road closings. More than 18 inches of floodwater was reported at Durham.

With less than six weeks before the filing deadline, only two local candidates have committed to running for office. State Representative Don Dahl of Hillsboro will seek his fourth term, and Republican Robert P. Craft of rural Marion has filed for Marion County sheriff.

Kathleen Ludwig is pictured on the front page as she goes through a food line Sunday at Florence’s annual Spring Fling. The fling was for the first time at Florence’s City Springs north of town.

Births announced in this issue include Hailey Rachelle Harshman, daughter of Burton and Amy Harshman of Cedar Point, and Shyann Audine Harris, daughter of Bill and Becky Harris of Florence.
