Marion High School students Michel Soyez, Micah Hanson, and Thurston Thies attended the 55th annual session of Boys State June 7 to 13 in Manhattan.

Starting July 1, a state law requiring children to be in a safety seat or a seat belt while riding in a vehicle will get more teeth. The law will apply to all children younger than 14. It also will include pickup trucks for the first time since the law was approved 10 years ago.

Kristy and Lynn Hess are pictured showing off their entry in the Marion County Record produce derby — an eight-pound cabbage that they say is not the largest in their garden. Kristy, 6, and Lynn, 8, and their parents, Keith and Sherry Hess, have grown an 11-pound head that they gave away. Sherry said cooler weather, rain, and sunshine helped the vegetables grow so big.

Mayor Gerry Harris is pictured as he snips the ribbon at Kraft Korner while owner Brenda McGinness and daughter Joanna observe. The shop, which rents space to artisans for a flat fee instead of consignment, had its grand opening Saturday.

Seventeen participants completed summer tennis this past week. Lessons were taught by Phoebe Janzen. Those enrolled were David Tharp, Dusty Sharp, Melissa Moffitt, Andrew Brookens, Chris Bowers, Arlene Tajchman, Maggie and Josh Powers, Brad Zeiner, Sarah and Andy Crofoot, Randi Barnett, Lance Geisbrecht, Jim Helmer, Scott Hannaford, Ryan Robertson, and Zack Bauman.

Full Circle band from Lawrence performed Saturday on Central Park Stage as part of Summerfest ’92. The performance, attended by about 300 people, featured fast-paced tunes, love songs, and a humorous musical account of life on the road.
