Members of Marion County VFW post home have been working all week to get ready for the Veterans’ Day celebration and unveiling of the Gold Star Memorial there. An attractive new entrance has been added to the post home, a monument constructed, and the names of those killed in combat added.

Christmas must be near for the lights have gone up along Marion’s Main Street. Another in a long series of holiday “openings” is planned for the day following Thanksgiving.

In a surprise move Monday afternoon, Police Chief Kenneth Hoffman announced his resignation which will become effective Sunday.

It has been recommended that the $200 cash award received at State PRIDE Day be used toward payment of a sprinkler system in East Park. The system is installed and will be used next spring.

Over 125 persons attended the open house Sunday of the Tampa Sunflowers’ recently remodeled senior citizens center. The project was sponsored in conjunction with the Tampa American Legion and Legion Auxiliary.

KU might not have the best football team in the Big 8, but it’s the only university with two graduates who are astronauts. Ron Evans, who went to the moon, and Joe Engle, commander of the Columbia, are high flying Jayhawks.

Jost Construction Company employees are pictured preparing the lot at the corner of Main and Fifth for the new building to be built there for Gene Winker. He plans to move the Goodyear Tire Center from the Saddle Horse Association building on Stadium Road to the downtown location. Winkler will purchase the business from Goodyear and expand it to more retail service lines. He hopes to be open at the new location soon after the first of the year.
