The Marion County Record this week won first place in Newspaper Editorial Workshop Services’ typography contest. This is the ninth year of the contest. The Marion newspaper had been a finalist and honorable mention winner in previous years, but this is the first time is had placed first in the national contest.

Featured in the Personality Profile column of this week’s newspaper is retired soil conservationist J. Kenneth Muse.

“Pride of Marion” will be the name of two Marion squads competing in “Anything Goes at the Tri-County 4-H Fair” Thursday at the Herington football field.

Dorothy Lawrence was honored Thursday afternoon with a farewell party in the clinic room of the courthouse. Friday was her last day in the office of the register of deeds, where she had worked for 13 years.

Entries in this week’s Marion County Record produce derby included a cucumber weighing slightly more than two pounds, brought in by Mrs. Cy Goertz. Mrs. Orville Hett brought a 2¾-pound tomato grown from seed given to her by men who purchased farm equipment from the Hetts last summer. The men told her the seed had come from Germany.
