More than 8,000 people basked in balmy, 75-degree warmth of the sun and enjoyed sights, sounds, and smells of the 67th annual Old Settlers Day parade in Marion.

Tommy Thompson, superintendent of postal operations at Marion, is subject of this week’s “Personality Profile” by feature writer Ruth Meyer.

Chamber of Commerce ambassadors Joyce Smith and Gerry Harris this week presented “first dollar of clear profit” certificates to Attorney Bob Brookens and to florist Wanda Richmond and her daughter.

Dorothy Varenhorst has been selected by Marion Business and Professional Women’s Club as woman of the year for her achievements and contributions to the Marion community. This is the first such award in the community.

Larry Loomis, Marion stucco and plaster contractor, has resurfaced the west side of Hassinger Plumbing at 2nd and Main Sts. The former brick wall now resembles stone structures found along Main Street.

Bennie Holtsclaw, Chase County farmer, recently was selected as a featured performer at the annual Hill and Hollow music festival in Powell, Missouri. Holtsclaw is a gospel and country music singer who has performed frequently throughout Marion and Chase counties and other areas.
