A major winter storm started the new year of 1979 and dumped 8 to 10 inches of snow, causing many problems for holiday travelers and closing many roads.
Harold Jost of Hillsboro was sworn in Marion morning by court clerk Geraldine Seibel as the third county commissioner. He joins Elmer Uphoff and chairman Ed Broz.
The Marion County Record has been designated a Blue Ribbon Newspaper by the National Newspaper Foundation for 1979-1980. The newspaper has been so honored for the past five years and is one of only a few in Kansas so designated.
A full page of this week’s issue shows people “tubing” in the snow on the downstream side of Marion Reservoir dam. Those in the photos are recognized as Rhonda Donahue, Jeff Richmond, Bill Hoch, Kevin Wilson, and Casey Case.
Kan-Go Inc., Marion-based oil and gas firm, recorded significantly higher revenue and profit during 1978, according to Steve Moore, president. Emphasis shifted from drilling, which was down industry-wide, to gas pipeline production and active wells.
