Barbara Weber, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Weber of Ramona, is the first place winner in this year’s Marion County Record subscription campaign.

She made a hard choice this week between a new typewriter, adding machine, or photo-copier. She picked the streamlined new Studio 44 Underwood Olivetti typewriter.

Mike Vinduska and Ed Steiner are mighty pleased with the results of their hunting trip last week in which they bagged two nice young deer near Topeka. This season is the first time in 60 years that it has been legal to shoot deer in Kansas.

The teachers and entire staff of Marion High School joined forces Wednesday afternoon at the close of school in a surprise birthday and retirement party for the school custodian, Herb Hett.

Marion Girl Scouts are again planning an annual observance of Epiphany, or 12th Night, which has become a time for a community burning of the season’s Christmas trees. The giant bonfire will be held Jan. 6 on the lot between the high school and the gymnasium.

The Marion Mashers, town basketball team, suffered a hard fought defeat at the hands of the blood-thirsty crew of college all-stars and former Marion high greats before a fine crowd Tuesday night.

Stand-out players for the alums were Gene Schimpf, 11 points; Lowell Ensey, 13; and Mike Schwemmer, 14. The big guns for the Mashers were Jay Jost with 23 and Boyce Baumgardner with 22.

Elsie Glover, Marion, received $100 at this week’s Marion Cash Days drawing and Arthur Bell, Marion, received $15. Not present were Mrs. David Senner, Ramona, who missed $5; Lorene Smith, Lincolnville, missed $20; and Mrs. Donald Wall, Marion, $5.
