A most important feature of every Old Settlers’ Parade is the many bands sprinkled throughout the length of the parade. This year some 700 musicians took part in the more than a dozen bands.

Pictured on the front page is the famous Rube Band, catching their breaths after a rendition of “Show Boy.” Members this year were 92-year-old Nodie Baker, Bill Meyer, Tom Good, Bob Hoch, Jean Pierce, Bud Pierce, Wilbur Rindt, Rosse Case, Bud Hannaford, Fred Allen, Lucille Britain, Bob Reinke, Betty Tipton, and Sue Harris.

In a move designed to combat the spread of Dutch Elm disease into this area, the city commission took action this week. They agreed to remove and destroy any tree on the parking area of any property in the city that has Dutch Elm disease.

Irvin Teetzen of Tampa missed $200 at this Wednesday’s Marion Cash Days drawing. Fred Mehlinger received $20; Georgia Moore, Marion, missed $5; Mrs. Don Biesterfeld, Tampa, missed $5; and Mrs. Loren Kelsey, Marion, missed $35.

Three well-known Marion area auctioneer, Colonels Bill and Carl Schnell and Lee Remy rode an interesting entry in the Old Settlers’ parade — a genuine old-time spring wagon pulled by a black mule.

Beginning Oct. 10, letter carriers throughout the Marion area will deliver special cards to every residence. Each card will have spaces for addresses for which the residents wish to have zip codes, and then returned to the postal carrier. Only the street address and city and state are required. Individual names should not be listed. The post office will add the appropriate zip code and return the cards to the mailer.
