Most all reactions to the first heavy snowfall of the season this week were happy ones, but not quite all. The snow blanket was welcomed with open arms by farmers but the snowfall turned into a $10,000 headache for the county highway department.

City crews moved mountains of snow Tuesday and Wednesday. In spite of this last minute moisture, 1966 will go down in the record books as one of the driest in the history of the community.

Last Thursday night’s drawing of prizes for the boys and girls was crowded with excited kids in spite of the sudden severe weather and the late hour.

The four winners were Terry Weigart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Weigart; Gloria Cox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Cox; Diana Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Anderson; and Randall Conyers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Conyers.

Shown on the front page are Student Council representatives of each of the four high school classes with some of the many food packages and other items collected by Marion High students to bring cheer to at least some of the needy families in Marion County.

The students are: Patricia Wood, representing the freshman class; Susan Hansen, sophomore class; Dennis Knoblock, junior; and David Longhofer, senior.

There were no winners in the adult cash drawing at 11 p.m. Thursday. Names called were Albert Zeller, Marion, $25; Mrs. Elmer Geis, Marion, $25; Mrs. C.J. Mehl, Marion, $10; Merle D. Albrecht, Lincolnville, $5; and Blanch Kelsey, Marion, $5.

Plans are being made for another observance of Epiphany by the Girl Scouts with a community Christmas tree- burning. A giant bonfire of Christmas trees will be ignited at 6:30 p.m. Friday between the high school and the gymnasium.
