During an informal dinner Saturday night at the Elgin Restaurant, Mayor Ira Newcomer was asked to place the first long distance call from Marion over the city’s new dial system. Newcomer is pictured talking with his son, John Newcomer, in Denver. Beside him are Mrs. Newcomer and Lloyd Simpson, Marion manager for Southwestern Bell.

Anita Schlehuber and Naomi Stenzel of Marion, students at Southwestern College, Winfield, have been named to an a cappella choir for the 1963-’64 school year.

D&K Café and Market will open Oct. 19 in the former location of Timbo’s on W. Santa Fe St. at the edge of town near the Pilsen road. It will be a café but also will handle staple grocery items and be open on Sundays and other days except Mondays.

Jim Keazer, Marion High School senior critically injured in an automobile accident Aug. 14, came back to Marion Monday evening and will be recuperating at St. Luke Hospital.

Many observers agreed that Friday night’s game between the Marion Warriors and Hillsboro Trojans was one of the most exciting, best-matched, and best-played contests to be seen on a high school football field in years. The winner was Marion, 19-12. The victory advanced the Warriors from 9th to 6th place in weekly state ratings of schools of this size. The Trojans, in 8th place last week, dropped out of the top 10.
